Sponsor Information for Confirmation

 

The role of a sponsor for the sacrament of confirmation is to “see that the confirmed person acts as a true witness to Christ and faithfully fulfills the obligations connected with this sacrament”  (Canon 892 from the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church).

 

A sponsor:

1)     Must be sixteen years of age or older.

2)     Must have received the sacrament of confirmation.

3)     Must be a practicing Catholic and provide testimony from their pastor that they are practicing the faith.  This is done through a sponsor certificate.

4)     Can be of either sex.

5)     Can be the Candidate’s godparent.  This is most desirable if possible.

6)     Can not be the Candidate’s parent, but the parent may act as proxy if the sponsor is unable to attend the confirmation liturgy.

**Note to St. Edward the Confessor Members:

            If you wish to be a sponsor and are an active and registered member of St. Edward the Confessor Parish you do not need to obtain a sponsor certificate.  Instead, please provide your Budget Envelop # on this sheet.  If you attend mass at St. Edward the Confessor Parish, but are not a registered member of the parish, and so do not have use of the budget envelopes which is used as an indicator of mass attendance, you may not be an eligible sponsor.
