May Days Blooming with Fun!

It’s hard to believe we are so close to the end of our school year!  May will be a busy month with many activities planned.  On May 13th, we will hold our Annual Writers’ Fair in conjunction with our Spring Open House.  Be sure to join us to see the magnificent creativity of our teachers and students.  The school will be open from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.  The Writers’ Fair will remain open until 8:00 p.m.

Friday, May 16th, will be our Spring Concert.  Under the direction of Mrs. Toth, all of our classes have been practicing diligently in anticipation of this special evening.  Our band students have been working very hard as well with Band Director, Mr. Jackson.

Grades 5-8 will rock with the New Britain Rock Cats on Thursday, May 22nd as they board the bus for a day of learning and enjoying America’s favorite pastime.

On Tuesday, May 27th, Grades 1-4 will take a step back in time at Dinosaur Crossing in Montville, CT.

As part of traditional Grade 8 festivities, the class will visit High Meadow in Granby on Tues., May 20th and will enjoy the 8th Grade Banquet on Wednesday, May 28th, at LaCucina de Hampden House in Hampden, MA.  Graduation will be held on Sunday, June 8th at a special Mass at noon.

H.E.R.O. Comes to St. Ed’s

Jackie Baxter of Healthkick Inspired Fitness will be joining us for four days in May when all grades will participate in the HERO program.  The program will be incorporated into our regular gym classes and includes fitness factors combined with elements of anti-bullying, self-control, anger management, building self-esteem and more.

Spring Golf Classic

Our 2nd Annual Spring Golf Classic is only a few weeks away!  Join the fun Friday, May 23rd at Hampden Country Club in Hampden, MA.  Last more than 80 golfers enjoyed a beautiful day of golf and an absolutely delicious banquet.  Consider teeing off your Memorial Day weekend with this fantastic event!  Even if golf is not your game, the incredible view and sumptuous dinner banquet are a real treat.  We’d love to see you there!  For more info, visit stedwardgolf.com or stop by the office for a brochure.

Colonial Day

Students in Grades 5 & 7 got a glimpse of colonial life right here at St. Edward School on Tuesday, April 22, thanks to Mrs. Napolitano and Mrs. Kania.  The day began with a special presentation by SES Alumna Erin Kania from the CT Historical Society and included many fun activities like candle-making, needlepoint, weaving on a loom, quill writing and exploring some intriguing historical pieces.  Special thank you to parent volunteers for the day, Mrs. Nosel, Mrs. Brosnan, Mr. Teerlinck, Mrs. Zbierski, and Mrs. Randazzo.

Race to Read

Throughout the year our students have been reading with extra fervor thanks to this year’s Race to Read program.  With regular “Pit Stops” tracking student progress and incentives along the way, the excitement has been building.  Our final Pit Stop will be held on Tuesday, May 13th.  On May 30th all children who have participated will enjoy an afternoon of celebration.  Thank you to Mrs. Zbierski for organizing this important literacy program.

CCEF Recognition

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) recently presented awards to two budding energy scientists for projects they presented at the 60th annual Connecticut Science Fair held in March at Quinnipiac University.  The fair encourages individuals or teams to create and display projects focused on life or physical sciences.  This year the CCEF presented awards to students who submitted solar energy projects. Our own 8th grader Chet Jambora received the CCEF award for his project, “The Effect of Heat Transfer Mediums on Solar Energy Absorption.”   Chet’s work was singled out of several hundred projects at this year’s fair developed by students in grades 7 through 12.  Congratulations, Chet!
