News from Sunny Florida

The Duchane Family arrived in Clearwater, FL, safely on December 23rd – just in time to get some rest and settle in for a warm Christmas Day made warmer by a Christmas tree and homemade ornaments sent from our school family. Our thoughts and prayers continue for them as they begin their new life in the warm Florida sunshine!

Holiday Thank You’s

Thank you to all those who contributed to all of the festivities throughout the Christmas Season here at St. Edward School.  Many wonderful activities brought cheer to both our school family as well as to our community.  With your generous donations, $300 was forwarded to Santa’s Toy Box!  Many area families also benefited from the generous food donations collected throughout December.

While weather interfered with our annual holiday concert for the residents of Evergreen Healthcare Center, our third, fourth, and fifth graders were able to brighten the season by sharing their talents with visitors to the Stafford Friendship Kitchen, while the eighth grade served lunch there on December 19th.

Many young shoppers were tickled to do some holiday shopping at the Jingle Bell Store.  Thanks to Mrs. Zbierski, Mrs. Lavoie and Mrs. Jacoboski for their efforts in bringing back an old favorite.  The store brought in $330 toward the Kristofer Stark Memorial Scholarship!

A special thank you to Mrs. Toth and Mr. Jackson for organizing our wonderful Christmas Concert.  All of our students worked so hard and performed beautifully – a highlight of the season for us all!

Catholic Schools’ Week

January 27 through February 2 is Catholic Schools’ Week.  This year’s theme is Catholic Schools: Lighting the Way.  As in past years, we have many fun activities planned for the week.

Beginning on Sunday January 27th, students and parents will once again be visiting area churches including St. Edward to speak about SES.  Volunteers will be needed for this event.

Green & Gold Day starts the week.  Students will be allowed to dress down wearing our school colors.  Also on Monday, students in grades K - 8 will be treated to a galactic presentation when the CT Children’s Museum’s (formerly the Science Center of CT) Star Lab portable planetarium visits.

Tuesday will be Comfy Day, and students may dress down in comfy clothing.  Students are reminded, however, that all clothing must be appropriate for the school environment.  Students arriving to school wearing inappropriate clothing will be issued a uniform from the used uniform closet to wear for the day.

Junior Achievement returns on Wednesday.  This fun, yet academic program, teaches students about the U.S. economic system and ties in directly with each grade’s social studies curriculum.  This program was a huge success last year, and we’re looking forward to another great day!

Also on Wednesday, grade 8 students will be preparing bag lunches for the Friendship Kitchen at the United Methodist Church.  A notice will be sent home asking students to bring in $3 to purchase the food for the lunches.

Thursday is our annual Open House and Ice Cream Social.  The Open House will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the Ice Cream Social will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m.  In past years, History Day has also been held on this day.  This year, because the History Day regional competition is not until the end of March, our own History Day will be held in late February to give our participants more time to work on their projects.

Spirit Day is Friday.  Students will wear full-dress uniforms and attend Mass at 9 a.m.  We will have a Spelling Bee in the morning and students will be treated to pizza lunch.  Beginning at 1 p.m. we will hold our annual girls vs. boys’ basketball game.

We round out the week with our 9th Annual Winter Wine & Cheese on Saturday evening.  The evening features plenty of food and wine and an opportunity for you to purchase art projects made by SES students.  Information regarding purchasing tickets for the event will be sent home soon, in the mean time, save the date so you can attend this fabulous event.  Remember that Wine & Cheese tickets count toward your fundraising obligation.   If you would like to help out please contact Mrs. Dawn Rudnansky at 872-4176.

Winter Weather

Just a reminder now that winter is here, children should arrive at school dress for the weather.  Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with hats, mittens, and coats (zipped or buttoned up).

Teacher supervision begins at 8 a.m., and the teacher on morning duty determines if the students will line up outside or in the gym.  If the decision is made to line-up outside, students should be in line and not running around the playground.

Please remember to watch local news channels for weather related delays and cancellations.  St. Edward School always follows the Stafford Public School system decisions as they provide our busing.  If Stafford is listed as a delay or closing, the same holds true to for St. Edward School even if you do not see us listed separately.  A calling chain is in place to notify families in the event of an early dismissal.  Please remember that there is no latchkey on early dismissal days.

Mad Science Returns

Many of you are familiar with the popular Mad Science After-school Program.  Mad Science will be returning again this year for a six-week program beginning February 13th.  A “roving” demonstration will be provided during lunches on Friday, January 25th to offer a preview of some exciting experiments.  Program information will come home on that day.

Fall Raffle Winners

On Monday, December 17, the winners were chosen for the 2007 Fall Raffle.  Linda Argenta was the lucky winner of the 55” LCD Projection TV with Veronica Introvigne taking home the Xbox 360 and Gift Cards to LLBean ($100) and Uno’s ($50) going to Benjamin Staves and Jill Bacchiochi.  Thank you to all those who participated in ticket sales.  The raffle raised $7700.

Other Fundraising News

Our Annual Magazine Sale will be sent home on Friday, January 11th and will end on Friday January 25th.  Please watch for details and incentives.

We hope everyone enjoyed delicious cookies from our December cookie dough fundraiser.  The sale brought in more than $1100.  Thanks to Mrs. Nosel for organizing this yummy fundraiser!  A dress down for those who sold ten or more items will be held on Friday, January 18th.  Eligible students will be notified.

Thank you also to Mrs. Machia for organizing the Beary Thoughtful Teddy Bear Sale which netted $325 toward this year’s Fun Day.
